Water-based Coatings

History

Water-based coatings are systems whose main solvent is water. Research on water-based coatings began in the 1950s, and today, after more than 50 years, there are many applications for them. Due to environmental laws, coating manufacturers have focused on improving the quality of water-based coatings, which has resulted in technological advancements with many advantages and at the same time the main and efficient characteristics that equals solvent-based coatings.

Water-based latex coatings

Water-based latex coatings are created by cross-linking the latex so that first, the solvent and water both evaporate and then the resulting pressure bonds the latex particles in the coating. The resulting latex has properties such as hardness, resistance to staining, flexibility and high stability against corrosion, and high gloss against solvent.

Advantages of Water-based Coatings

  1. Strong reduction of VOC (volatile organic compounds) and reduction of environmental pollution so that meeting the strictest environmental regulations.
  2. Using water instead of solvent for dilution, which reduces the solvent cost drastically.
  3. Reducing smelling during the work, eliminating the risks of fire, and increasing work safety.
  4. Saving resources and energy

Types of Resins used in Water-based Coating Industry

    • Water-based Acrylic Resins

This resin has the best quality and the highest production and consumption among water-based resins. It has an emulsion production process using the polymerization of acrylic and methacrylic monomers and their derivatives in an aqueous medium with initiator. Resitan Co. provides products based on acrylic styrene and pure acrylic with suitable technical specifications.

    • Water-based Alkyd Resins

Water-based alkyd resins are usually polyesters based on saturated or unsaturated oils or fatty acids and alcohols that are modified to create miscibility.

    • Water-based Saturated Polyester Resins

Water-based saturated polyester resin is produced by condensation polymerization of two-factor acids and bases and the salt formation process in water.

    • Water-based Epoxy Resins

Water-based epoxy resin is generally consisted of an amine-based curing agent and an epoxy resin.

    • Water-based Polyurethane Resins

Water-based polyurethane resin is a colloidal two-phase system containing polyurethane components in an aqueous medium. Most of the third type acid and nitrogen groups are neutralized and form the basis of the dispersion center in water.

By relying on its internal experts and by using high-quality domestic and imported raw materials with the best properties such as appropriate tensile and abrasion resistance, and good adhesion Resitan Co. has produced a variety of water-based acrylic resins suitable for the water coating industry.
